Rebuilding this site, again

1 min read

Two months ago this site had a hand-written WebGL shader running behind every page. Projects floated in it at different depths, and moving the mouse parallaxed them against each other. It was fun to build. It was also the first thing anyone noticed, which is the wrong order for a portfolio.

So I started over with three rules.

Lead with what I ship

The home page now opens with my own products, each with its real status. Client work comes second. If you only read one screen, you should know what I build and whether it's still running.

Make it a place to write

I want to write more about building small products in public: pricing experiments, SEO that worked, launches that didn't. Posts are MDX files in the repo, there's an RSS feed, and there's nothing else to maintain.

Spend motion in one place

The headline arrives once when the page loads. Hovering a project shows its cover next to the cursor. That's it. Everything else is type, spacing and a single amber accent.

The old version is still in git history if I ever miss it.
